Horsley FC gets a hat trick in League Cup finals
On Saturday 22 April, not one, not two but three Horsley FC teams claimed victory in their respective League Cup finals.
The Horsley U8 Eagles were triumphant in a dramatic League Cup final against Teddington, It was a great game with chances at both ends and both teams gave it their all in a classic end to end cup tie, but neither side could break the deadlock during normal time. Charlie and Jasper were outstanding in defence thwarting the opposition attacks whilst Eddie made a fantastic save to deny what looked to be a certain goal just before half-time. Moxon, Alex and Jamie worked tirelessly further up the pitch to create several chances which we couldn’t quite convert.
Going into the break at 0-0 and playing with the slope in the second half we were confident of pushing on for victory, but Teddington defended admirably and almost caught us out on the counter attack with Jasper intervening to make a miraculous goal-line clearance when a goal looked certain. We then almost won it in the dying seconds when Max’s shot from the edge of the box just flashed wide of the post. So it was down to the lottery of penalties. Harry made a great save to deny Teddington’s second penalty and our penalty taking practice bore fruit when all of our boys dispatched their spot-kicks to seal the victory. Congratulations to all the boys on a fantastic result, a great way to end the season!
The Horsley U10 Crusaders also put on a hard-fought and spirited performance which saw saw them beat Nork Park Rangers 2-1 in the Treasurer's Cup final and crown a brilliant season. Playing uphill on a tough pitch in the first-half, and after a tumultuous opening 90 seconds when they could easily have fallen behind, they settled themselves down well and were on top. A penalty just before half-time was cooly converted by Thomas and they went into the break deservedly ahead and looking to add to their lead.
Playing downhill in the second half in some ways made it harder as the ball kept running away from them, but they still managed to create a number of chances that they just couldn't quite put away to get that 2-goal cushion. And then with 5 minutes to go...a goalmouth scramble and Nork Park get the equaliser! No extra time and therefore thoughts turning to who is going to take the penalties in the shoot-out - all a bit of a blur as the ball goes into the Nork Park box one last time, the ball loops up into the air, over their keeper and nestles in the back of the net....last-minute Cup final winner, the stuff dreams are made of!
And finally the Horsley U17 were the winners of the Surrey Primary League after a very close match with Woking Town FC U17 Jets in a tense final which saw them win 1-0.
